DOOKOOM – A reaction to the chaos of contemporary South Africa

Dookoom are a hip-hop group from South Africa fronted by Isaac Mutant. My relationship with the band started in 2013 at their first concert at a venue in Cape Town called “Blitzkrug” for just about two nights – the place is called “Lefties” today. I took a few photographs of the performance and frontman Isaac Mutant. We began to work on band photos and portraits of the band members. Some of the shots were featured by Noisey US and France as well as many local and international media.

In the video “Larney Jou Poes” angry farm workers ride on a tractor/trailer over fields on a farm, eventually starting a fire and burning the word “Dookoom” onto a hillside – according to Haupt, invoking the “powerful mystical Cape figure of the doekoem” to signify their revolt.
